About a week ago, I thought I’d surely go bald and it has felt like my head has been on fire off and on since then. The reason? Well, I washed my hair with undiluted Dr. Bronner Castile Soap and that was a pure nightmare or something. The good news is that I did not go bald and everything is now better, but this has really freaked me out!
Why I want to go cruelty-free.
Well, that’s pretty simple. For the animals and the planet. Since going vegetarian I have slowly trying to eat better and go more “vegan” or something like that. I fail most of the time, pretty miserably, but I try. What I mean by trying is that I actively try to eat mainly vegan and mostly Whole Foods which are Plant Based. WFPB for short, just so you know. I really want to maximize my fiber intake and lose the weight without having to do vigorous activity. Because exercising is so boring! I proved that it can happen a few weeks during the summer of 2017, so I know that eating a lot of fiber helps with weight loss. But this part is also about the cruelty-free part. I went vegetarian primarily for health reasons and for weight loss. That doesn’t mean, however that I do not know about the horrors that occurs in the animal agriculture business of things. But I do this anyways primarily for health reasons, and by not being officially vegan and also not being a WFPB vegan, you can expect that I am not losing weight since being just a vegetarian is too easy. There’s milk and eggs in everything and me and the “hubby” (aka the BF) loves all the packaged, processed stuff so that is why we are not losing weight and why it, for me may seem pointless to do this mainly for health reasons. But I’ll get there eventually. I have to, I mean… I hate being overweight! And I really dislike to exercise because of various reasons. Mostly due to the Swedish crappy weather… But it is still so boring!
I have now been a vegetarian for over a year and I love it. It works wonderfully. But now I feel like I’m ready to do more. Both for the environment, for my personal health and for the animals. That is why I’m slowly starting to eat more WFPB stuff and also why I’m curious about going cruelty-free as well. I have washed my hair on and off for over a year with a vegan product called Malibu C with their Undo-goo shampoo and Illumin8 conditioner.I love the smell of them, but the shampoo tends to create residue and buildup in my hair after a while. The conditioner and the shampoo are amazing, however! Therefor, I have temporarily gone back to only using Head & Shoulder’s shampoo for dandruff. It works wonders and I love it, but the animal aspects of it and all of the gunk that’s being poured out into the ocean etc. due to me washing my hair with it is starting to get to me. That’s why I’d like to find something better. Preferably something that both me and my BF could use, because I love sharing the same shampoo with him. It saves space and money in the shower, you know 😛 .
The horrible experience with Dr. Bronner’s Soap…
The main reason why I started out with Dr Bronner, is mainly due to my family. My brother and sister have been health nuts for years, especially due to the environmental parts of it all. They use as little processed stuff as possible in their diet as well as in their homes. They have been using Dr Bronner for years and I’ve gotten curious about the products as well, so I wanted to try it out for myself. I found an online apothecary that sells Dr Bronner’s stuff and I was also able to buy small traveling packs as well. This is what I ordered. After a few days it got delivered and I believe I washed my hair with it on Saturday. At first I followed the instructions and took ½ a tablespoon undiluted and washed my hair with it. It did barely lather and it felt generally weird to wash my hair with it. I did not, however follow up with their recommended rinse, because I did not know you needed to! My hair felt worse than it used to way back when I tried to do a “no ‘poo” thing for my hair. It felt dirty, greasy and it stood out by itself when I brushed it. The day after it felt like crap and I had to wash it again. This time I made the worst mistake ever! This time I probably took 3 tablespoons worth of the stuff and then it finally lathered and felt like normal shampoo. I was relieved then that it worked, but when I washed it out… Oh, My Frickin’ God! My hair turned into a fatty, greasy lump of I have no idea what! It was completely unmanageable! I was horrified! I thought that after this, my BF is gonna have to shave it all off, because this is not happening! I immediately washed my hair with some of the normal shampoo and I followed up with some Malibu C conditioner just to be safe. Then my hair felt like normal, but afterwards… Then the real nightmare started. The following morning I woke up with a feeling that my head was feeling extremely warm. It was like a localized fever on my scalp. I was not red, however and have not been since, but it felt really warm. Ever since then I had to wash my hair multiple times, both with water and with just regular shampoo. I’ve also had to splash some water on my head to cool it down a little. I think the feeling started to go away on Thursday or something, but it has been going on and off sometimes since then as well. And I thankfully still have all of my hair and it is still shiny as usual! I also have not lost any more hair than usual, so everything is fine. I just regret this whole experience!
I will never, ever use Dr Bronner to wash my hair again and I am warning you to not do it either. At least not how I did it. Dilute it! Use the acidic rinse afterwards that they recommend or something… But what about other cruelty-free products? I’d really like to start using that stuff, but I am so afraid of doing so! This event has scared the shits out of me or something, so for now I’ve gone back to using crappier products that tests on animals and pollutes our planet. I am to scared to try anything that’s remotely better. In general, however I am hoping to one day have switched all of my hygiene products to vegan, cruelty-free options. Everything from shampoo to toothpaste to my daily lip balm. But as of now – I’m to scared to try it.
